Tavern brawler feat question
Is Tavern Brawler/throwing items only good when you get to higher levels or obtain certain gear or should it be useful at lower levels as well? I just got to level 4 and was thinking of taking it for Karlach because I read it was powerful but I went back to a previous fight to test throwing (I hadn't used it at all so far) and wasn't impressed with it compared to a regular melee weapon attack. I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong but when I tried throwing a 40 pound chest at Anders it only did 4 damage once I managed to actually hit him with it compared to a potential 12+ damage from using a greatsword (I even tried a 100 pound chest I had and it only did 5 damage). I made her a Wildheart Barbarian (bear heart to hopefully tank some) so I know that isn't the best choice for the throwing builds but wasn't sure if that meant I shouldn't bother with throwing if I want a tank or if it gets better somehow with non-Berserker builds.

You throw daggers, spears, and other weapons with the "thrown" label at the bottom.

It's broken, but far from the only way to play Barb.

The gear you want is mostly in Act 1. A ring sold by the starting guy in the grove, a set of gloves for the quest to save the guy from the mushrooms in the underground area .

And yes, the best part about it is the accuracy bonuses.

go buy the "returning spear" from the goblin vendor. If items aren't marked as "thrown" you get no bonuses.

Tavern brawler dmg was nerfed in patch 5 but it is still very good.
for barbarian you go beserker as you get an attack as a bonus action. So at level 5 when you get extra attack you get 3 throws per turn ( 2 normal 1 from frenzied rage).

As everyone stated above the "to hit" mechanic will be around 90-95%, so you will basically NEVER miss

If you dont know what "bounded accuracy" means .it is the ability to land a strike. The game essentially never lets you go below (unless there are special conditions)30% or above 75% to hit. Tavern brawler breaks this as it adds your STR modifier 2 times to both to hit and dmg. so if you had 18 str, thats +4 to hit, with Tavern Brawler it is now +8

throw build absolutely destroy the game in act 1 and 2

Im pretty sure you can throw Salami for some serious bludgeoning damage

Even if your not using returning items it can get busted with fighter as well.

3 level dip into eldritch knight gets you a few spell slots for shield and turns all your bound weapons into returning weapons.
It also gets you some other really nice stuff like a fightning style, second wind, action surge etc...

If you make an optimised throw build (with berserk barbarian) you can completly broke the game. It's fun for a few minutes, after that you miss some challenge...

My recommandation: DON'T play an optimized throw build, but use it to make a fun build work (ex: barbarian berserk with only his fists and enemies for weapons, spore druid weapon thrower for only one launch per turn, but a deadly one...)
