If you plan to mod it, i suggest BG3 Mod Manager for this game.
I am an avid Vortex user for modding, but the Mod Manager for this game works great.
There is so much to explore, find and choices... there's no need to wait IMHO
Other than that (and official mod support as noted above) ... no reason not to play now.
I made it about 40 hours into my first play and almost quit there, but once I tried out the mods, my interest in the game increased as I could make my own party rather than be stuck with the limited choices the vanilla game gives you.
Patch 7 (September) will add official mod support, but it will never give you the 1,000s of customization choices the unofficial mods give you right now to improve the game from meh to great.
You can probably get through your 1st play before Patch 7 drops and then it will give you some new things to try that would make your 2nd play unique, that is if the game is something you enjoyed enough the 1st time.
