For ranger you want to go gloomstalker straight until level 5 with sharpshooter feat at level 4 , at level 6 you take 2 in fighter with "archery" for fighting technique. Use titan string bow you get from delivering the missing shipment (its at the vendor).
Last 4 levels you take in rouge asassin subclass for 100% crits and reset actions on initiative
Use strength potions as often as you can. dip weapon, drakethroat glaive buff (act2)
each arrow will hit for around 36 dmg non crit, 65+ crit and up to 120 dmg if target is vulnerable
This is one of the strongest , if not THE strongest build in the game. Many use it to solo with
Use Spike Growth for guaranteed AoE damage.
Ranger in BG3 is just one of those classes that isn't quite a Fighter, or Rogue, or Druid... so it's basically a Jack of three trades, master of none. Think about what role you'd like your Ranger to play then decide if it's best to even have a Ranger in that role. In my opinion, you won't.
Paladin has smite which is great single target damage. Ranger can also do a lot of damage but not early on. With certain items, feats, level 5 you'll see a bump up on damage but mostly remember to take all the special arrows and use them appropriately.
My pro tip: do not sell magic items when you find them, and try to buy all the special ones that you can find. Store them at camp. To get gold, just grab all the silverware, every painting you can find, loot every weapon and piece of armor, and every book too (for some reason they sell for much more gold in the city than outside it, by the way)
Reason for keeping all magic stuff is that there are so many crazy synergies you can make, it's lot of fun to experiment with those. And there are some really good sets for archer type characters!
Currently in act 3 and have The Dead Shot longbow (another way to increase crits) and I am zapping most enemies in 1 round with 3 bow attacks, plus a secondary weapon attack if they are still alive and in melee range.
I am not really seeing any need to try and improve on the build with any other classes.
Try this: go two-weapon fighting, ranger 5 (hunter with colossus slayer), then rogue, picking up thief at level 3. What this does is give you two bonus actions, thus using your offhand swing twice, allowing you to make a total of 4 attacks per round every round. If they're too far, you can bonus action dash to them. You will be remarkably mobile and triggering your sneak attack will give 2d6 extra damage once per turn at rogue 3, increasing to 4d6 by rogue 7. You can bonus action hide to help proc said sneak attack if need be as well.
Not to mention this works both for melee and ranged dual wielding (hand crossbows), making you a very versatile combatant.
not sure what level u are or how deep your understanding of weapons/feats and buffs is
if your doing 10-18 dmg with a bow, add sharpshooter feat for a flat +10 dmg.
You will need high dex so use the gloves of dexterity you get at the githyanki cresche (these set your dex to 18) grab the "risky ring" off of Oral Oblodra in moonrise towers. This will give you "advantage" on all attacks essentially nullifying the -5 to hit penalty from sharpshooter feat
adding fighter at level 6 you get to choose a "fighting style". Make this archery. You will get +2 to hit effectively capping out your chance to hit at around 80-85%
additional to hit mechanics like bless or oil of accuracy will add even more often times youre "to hit" will be 90-95%
if you dip your weapon in fire or poison add another + 1d4 dmg.
add" luck of the far realms (illithid power) or killers sweetheart ring (act2 trials of Shar) for guaranteed crits
As you can see the damage can stack quite fast. Add in some speicalty arrows and your easily doing 45-65 dmg average attacks by level 8
if you make the target "velnerable " with say aura of murder or amulet of branding you double THAT dmg...lol.
So you can see 140+ dmg crits with a 90% chance to hit are very possible. if you were to use "arrow of multiple targets" you can get 120+ crits on multiple targets. theres NO build in the game that can come close to that dps
All that at range and stealth
GOAT build
