Do you need arrows to fire crossbows/bows?

I can't use my crossbow in combat, is it because I don't have any arrows in my inventory?

ammunition isn't a thing in the game; you can shoot infinite arrows/bolts

only reason you shouldn't be able to use your crossbow is if you're not proficient in the weapon

you should be able to use it even if not proficient, just won't hit much and it may interfere with other stuff like spellcasting.

would need to see / know more to figure out the issue. Normally, it consumes a primary/main action (as opposed to bonus action) and would just use the 'shoot' arrow attack icon.

the ammo in game is for special effects like a small fire aoe or teleport to target etc magic arrows.

I couldn't fire it at all, even though I started the turn with it already in my second hand and with LOS on the enemy, so why couldn't I fire it?

Is it a one-handed crossbow? Maybe link a screenshot of your character.
