So i would not play a game that don't at least give this much of an option
https://files.catbox.moe/56gaa0.jpg
I didn't play it though so would also appreciate if somebody shared feedback and maybe compare some aspects to BG3
I really wish Larian would take over and make a new Shadowrun game.
I would recommend WoTR by Owlcat. The bugs are mostly ironed out at this point, you can get mods to avoid the annoying crusading sidegame, as well as the annoyingly constant random map encounters, and at least one of the DLC is almost worth it. They may even eventually release DLC 6 at this point. Dunno about Rogue Trader, I'm still hesitant on that.
I overall think this is the better game, but I give credit where it's due: it features a built in mod manager that updates your mods for you (that's a nice level of official support) and Toybox mod is the swiss army knife of mods - I just love messing with everything it can do, (until I crash my game, LOL.) Out of the box it supports leveling to 20 with parties of 6, and the Mythic Paths make the endgame really interesting.
Some folks like Solasta, if you're craving the 5E experience and you want it more conforming to TT rules. I kinda don't like various minimalistic aspects to it, but it does have a dungeon editor and mod support, with DLC and mods you can level to 16 and have parties > 4.
Pillars of Eternity 2 is really interesting. It's not D & D (and not even PF which is a very close relative), but the system they are using has quite a bit of similarity.
I also don't see much the links between BG3 and KCD.
But it's not clear that KCD is any ARPG nor that it isn't a CRPG, FYI most CRPG aren't more CRPG than Gothic 2 gold and that's just one example.
I can't say if KCD is a CRPG, tried it, but found its UI with mouse+keyboard rather annoying, so stoped fast and still have to play it. But Gothic 2 gold is pure CRPG, despite no party, no TB, no RTwP.
Your suggestions look fine even if it wouldn't be mine, or at least not my first suggestions:
- WoTR: I have serious resentment against this dev, but I don't get why it seems most recommend it instead of their first, Kingmaker. PFK has a much better writing and that changes in deep the game, and better companions overall. When on another side, WoTR could have better TB but it's still clearly tuned for RTwP. And with a partial play I failed see what makes WoTR better.
- Solasta: I would put it in my list but with the highlight that it's a Tactical game with various nice RPG mood. So it's mainly to play party TB combats with D&D 5e, and alas only the base 5e because they used the free content of the IP plus extra custom to add subclasses.
- PoE2: I found it much better than PoE1, better writing, better combats, extra multi class, better companions. But its TB mode is weird, hence I would suggest use the RTwP and it's quite different than BG3.
With a bit of your perspective but different opinions bases, myself I would suggest:
- Shadowrun Dragonfall:
Short CRPG but great on many aspects. Great writing in my opinion overall better than in BG3, great combats and very varied, very good companions with a better attaching value than those in BG3, great topics, very good for skills check, very good Hub, great IP more original and more modern than D&D.
- Dragon Age Origin:
Rather big CRPG (play it with all DLC), RTwP combats and not TB but a serious focus on hand crafted design of each combat. When you start play BG3, it reminds the most DAO, and there's clear influences as major focus on camp, companions digging, design efforts on each combat, few more.
In my opinion DAO has an overall better writing, overall quite better companions, quite more developed consequences postludes, much better character origins system, but that's it. It aged a bit now, it is far from amount of choices with consequences that has BG3, the RTwP combats are no match to BG3 TB combats, its writing is quite mature but hasn't this provocative adult only approach.
- Wasteland 2:
Underrated CRPG, that suffered negativity of Jagged Alliance fans because of party TB shooting combats. But it's a great CRPG clearly quite better than Wasteland 3. Good writing, great combats if you skip abuse of SR and AR generating too static too long range only combats, quite good companions, many good exploration, more.
- Baldur's Gate 1&2 EE:
For many players a bit thanks to their EE editions but not only, it's games that aged a lot less than most games of their time. The quality of iso graphics didn't aged as 3D of this time aged awfully. Its party RPG UI design is still the main reference, and BG3 didn't improve much thing. Its party RTwP combats are still unmatched by more modern RTwP RPG a bit thanks to a D&D version better suited to RTwP. It is still unbeaten for companions, for castles implementation in RPG, for amount of tricks to find.
And then it's more BG2 only because BG1 despite well polished with the EE version, suffer of D&D design for low levels, suffer of not having any enemy scaling system unlike in BG2, suffer of harness from D&D design for low levels, focused on offering an absurd amount of companions but then suffer on their development level compared to games as BG2, BG3, DAO, more.
Still I would advise try BG1 but not insist and switch to BG2 if BG1 isn't working for you. But it's fine to just start with BG2.
- Divinity Original Sin 2:
Far from BG3 and BG3 isn't anymore a sort of D&D game feeling like a DOS game as it could during first Early Access phases. But it's a quite good party TB CRPG, with a quite differrent combat system but with its own qualities, solid writing even if not at same level than BG3, very good on exploration too and with a similar blueprint, but no way at same scale level than BG3, DOS1 isn't an AAA RPG unlike BG3.
- The Witcher 1:
No, not the 2 even less the 3. The reason is the dev auto censoring himself more and more, but don't know for CP77. It's one of the rare CRPG, single character and Real Time, but with great writing with a provocative adult only approach quite in advance of its time and alas lost later by the dev because of auto censoring.
- Divinity Original Sin 1:
Still unmatched in Larian RPGs for its level of freedom and amount of out of the box solutions. But the writing is very focused on humor and weak on other aspects and it hurts many players. Still myself I advise it and feels it has some distant links with BG3.
Past those RPG, I could list more CRPG or even RPG with deep values, but hardly much relevant to BG3. To stick to not too old RPG, I would suggest additionally:
- Mass Effect Legendary
- Tyranny
- Elex 1
- Jagged Alliance 3
- Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer.
- Assassin Creed Odyssey
- Blackguards 2
- Dragon Age Inquisition, Atom RPG, Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky.
- Plus but eventually that aged too much: Fallout 1&2, Gothic 2 Gold.
same woke that was prevalent pre-trump days but you were never butt hurt back in them days, amirite old man?
Thank you so much for such a detailed verbose post. I like a lot of those games on your list and I'd love to try a couple which you pointed out.
I'd love glorified, 3Dfied, Larianfied Shadowrun game. How did I never think of this. Larian and Shadowrun would make a banger
