Assuming you are playing on normal, you're probably not used to D&D 5e ruleset, it can be a bit confusing, I know I had to learn it to play. Just take your time and if you predict trouble stealth your group (shift+C) , find the enemies, plan on hot to attack and surprise attack them, it makes a world of diference.
The "Guardian" you created at the beginning is not a companion. Although she(?) has already helped you once, and will help you again in the future.
You can simplify it by sneaking to higher platform to right, and starting the combat from here, but dodge it, I failed quote how.
So I imagine you fall upon Astarion rather fast then can grab Gale or Lae'zel or both and you already has Shadowheart.
Perhaps it requires a minimal STR? Last time I started with 8 but got bored and changed later for 10.
You can make the jump with 8 strength. It's a good idea to pickup Gale before doing the brain fight on tactician/honor mode. With only two party members it's possible to get wiped if you get unlucky with the dice rolls.
There's some ways to do it with just you and Shadowheart, but bad rolls can kill even the best strategy (and Shadowheart needs new dice). The best I've found is to activate it from as far away as possible, try to lure the IDs into the fire, and then kite as much as you can. It also very much helps to get the extra XP on the Nautiloid so you can go in at Level 2.
So in addition to Shadowheart (the terribly built Cleric from the Nautaloid) the starting area also includes Gale (a decent wizard) just a short hop from the Intellect Devourer encounter, Astarion (a serviceable rogue) on the other side of the ship, and Lae'zel (that space elf fighter who barged her way into your party) a little distance from the ship. They can be quite easy to miss, so if you're interested in picking them up then search around.
If you aren't on Honor Mode, save just before the fight. Then try to stay out of melee with them, if you can. Hit them with a ranged attack and then back away. They will usually waste their action dashing toward you, at which point hit them with ranged again and back away again.
At Tactical difficulty they will use their ranged attack, so just hope that it misses.
Also, if you worked at it, you should have about half a dozen health potions at the start of the fight. Don't try to save them for later ... use them to keep topped up every time you take damage, so that one hit won't take you down.
