Paid the price isn't as bad as you guys have been saying.
It gives a nice intimidation bonus permanantly.

It doesn't prevent crits anymore like it did in the past, you can unlock it very early, and you only get disadvantage against attacking hags, aka just 2 optional boss fights against ethel and jatlo too i guess? It's a very rare enemy.

Perception rolls can be made with 3 other characters that you travel with, but intimidation can usually only be done with one.

On paper it looks bad, but I'm playing with it and it actually isn't as awful as people seem to think it is. Completely useless if you're not a charisma based character, but it's useful if you're a warlock/paladin.

You miss out on volo's eye, but you can just grant it to someone else in the party.

That's the one where you get the eye from the hag, right?

I think the main issue is that Volo's eye lets you see invisibility and you can't do both.

You can do both, just not on the same character. Give the character in your party who rolls a lot of intimidation checks the "Paid the Price" buff, give another character you'll often use Volo's eye.

That is true, of course. I was just stating the reason I've seen most. Probably a lot of players only really consider it with their main character even though Ethel clearly states she'll take anyone.

Agreed; PTP is pretty nifty.
Sure it's not AS good as the alternative, but it's certainly not *bad*.

Intimidation is not terribly useful. Almost every time you could use it, you could also use persuasion or deception.
Always trust Volo! However we gave the paid the price to the bard, see invisibility should really be on a melee character so they can get up close to use it.

I wish it had more in the plot though, imagine the hag being more aware and messing with you in act 3 cuz she saw you coming or the eye playing another roll. Shame it didn't.

When you ask the troll market for their opinion, you get a troll answer.
