Going from modded to vanilla to join and play with friends

My friend and I were having a vanilla game playthrough together, but I modded my game with BG3 Mod Manager. I loaded them all in the inactive mod list, even moved the script extender file DWrite.dll out of the bin game directory folder, but I still can't join his game. We were playing together normally before I modded my game, what gives?

uninstall, delete game directory, and reinstall game

Just log in to your computer as a different users. The new user will have no mods installed. Then when your finished you can turn around and log back into your old modded account and everything is the same and your good to go.
