I only go shield on spellcasters.
There’s never a valid reason to not have Great weapon master on Paladin, Fighter, Barb.
Maybe for number-crunchers trying to maximize their damage. Sword & Board is still pretty good for maintaining defense, especially if you're PLD/WLK who can stack damage riders to narrow the gap between a mace and a greatsword. Shield of the Undevout with GOO-Lock while using Bow of the Banshee; and equipping something like Belm for the free BA attack, Blood of Lathander to guarantee Callous Glow procs, Flail of Ages to proc Burn or Chilled (both of which can proc Reverb which for a GOO-Lock can mean a stunlock), Infernal Rapier for the free summon and the increased spell saves (PLDs get some good save spells, so boosting this is better than people think), Phalar Aluve for team-buffing, the Blackguard's sword to make your smites block reactions, or - hell - even Crimson Mischief for a crapton of extra damage (assuming you have a way of guaranteeing advantage on the target like as a Vengeance PLD or if you have someone with Faerie Fire or is using Gontr Mael).
