I still regret the very minimal links with BG1&2, makes Viconia a NPC what a sadness, in whole huge chapter 1 the only references I remind are one or two short books, that's a huge missed opportunity to build a stronger feeling of BG the third, and play on nostalgia.
But I admit it's very difficult to continue write a strong marking character, it's full of traps and potential disappointments. For me Imoen was butchered in BG2, or Morrigan butchered in DAI.
If - hopefully when - modders get more access to dialogue and scripting files, we could see this change. And have possible early recruitment.
In the meantime, the other mechanical issue with Minsc's late recruitment is you have no ranger until Act 3 (unless you want to play one, or respec another companion to one). Veryll the drow ranger hireling can fill in, but he's as dull and robotic as all the other hirelings.
But yeah, he would probably suffer from lack of lines / dialog in Act 1/2. :(

He reminds me of BG3's version of "The Tick".
