Who, or What is Withers?
The final, the very final scene before the credits by the end of the game... At a time I thought him to be Jergal. Like as if he was despising the human minions he gave his (split) power to. I mean, being able to cast ressurect at will does gives an hint of immense, godlike, power. And yet... He mentioned, at a time, of the other gods watching (the dead 3's actions). Like as if he was a tool, a messenger, of other gods, of all of them?

Your opinions?

We will never know and none of it is canon. Sorry just wont be. They played fast and loose with D&D lore. Some of it is outright ridiculous and just fanwank. Like Jergal rezzing elves. Pulling people from the Wall/Fugue (Kelemvor/Mykrul cannot and it's a big part of their story). Illithid with souls. Hell, Illithids with personalities. Karsus. Mystral. Avatars. Deva's who aren't Deva's.

Having Preying Mantis God show up with Ao's powers was the least cringe worthy lore change.

- It's canon if WotC (or whatever future owners) say it's canon whether we like it or not. How much if anything shows up in future material is up in the air. They've previously stated only things that are 5E and published by WotC are canon, similar to Disney's approach with Star Wars.
- Elves not being able to come back is old lore and was retconned long ago. It's homebrew now.
- If demons and devils and whatever else can literally pull things from the Wall/Fugue, the gods certainly can.
- Illithids with personalities is not new. Illithids still don't have souls.
- The events around Karsus and Mystryl are still the same.
- The whole Aylin being an Aasimar is entirely possible and in line with lore. If referring to the summoned Deva's not having very specific stats and abilities, that's just pedantic stupidity.

With how successful BG3 is, it will almost certainly be made canon by wotc.

Can't wait for the novelization that completely butchers the story and characters like the old Baldur's Gate novels.

That was largely (thankfully) part of the 'pre-5E' purge. Anything previous to their 'new' canon can have bits picked out and used, such as the previous hero being called Abdel Adrian, but that doesn't mean everything is used from anything that is picked out. Only the picked out old bits are part of the new canon.

Withers is thinly veiled game mechanic to allow you to create companions.
Not dissimilar to what G-Man from Half-Life was metaphorically. Basically representative of game developer

After BG3, he wins at least one worshipper ;)

it already is, the specifics of which version of bg3's events is canon will be decided as time goes on but the absolute crisis did happen, the characters of the story are canon to the forgotten realms

if i had to guess, some version of repentent durge will be the canon one

Jergal you pick it up right away has dark urge

The god that made the dead three gods

Also he is still super powerful when you divine sense him he pretty much confirms he is still god like without saying much analyze him has a paladin or cleric

Though the proper term for a god with no followers is a quasi-deity to be more correctly soon has he gains more followers and if he wants his old powers back can get them just have to do that but he is more happy being a scribe really
