WIZARD/GALE: Act 1 Gear Suggestions
In my game, Gale is an evocation wizard. The items I've listed here go all the way up to the end of Act 1 (through the Githyanki Creche). I found that his gear was the most difficult.

GALE / WIZARD / LEVEL 7
Head: Circlet of Blasting / Adds Scorching Ray spell as a free cast
Chest: Infernal Robe / AC+1, Fire Resistance, Fire Shield spell
*Note: The only way to get this legitimately is by killing Karlach. Since no one wants to
do that, this is the one item I spawned into my game.
Hands: Daredevil Gloves / +1 bonus to spell attack rolls / lets you use ranged spell attacks as
melee spell attacks when you are standing next to a creature.
Feet: Disintegrating Night Walkers / Immunity to several movement conditions (i.e. ensnare,
icy surfaces, etc.) Grants Misty Step spell as a free cast.
Neck: Pearl of Power / Restores a single Spell Slot of 3rd level or lower upon activation
Finger: Strange Conduit Ring / When concentration, weapon attacks do +1d4 damage
**I need an alternative for this if anyone has a suggestion
Finger: Ring of Jumping
** Also need an alternative for this. Rings are tough for a spellcaster.
Weapon (Main): Melf's First Staff / +1 spell save DC & spell attack rolls
Gain Melf's Acid Arrow spell (free cast)
Weapon (Offhand): Glowing Shield / Gain 8 temp HP if below 50% health (1x/short rest)
Ranged: Light Crossbow +1

Give Gale the necklace that gives him an extra missile every time he uses Magic Missile.

You have to realize that some magic items are constant effect, and some are only used once per short or even long rest. There is no point wearing around that amulet that gives you a free spell slot. Just keep it in your pack. You can always put it on, use it, and then take it off again. But the magic missile one gives you an extra missile every time you use the spell as long as you are wearing it.

1) All you need is this set: The Spellsparkler (Staff) + Gloves of Belligerent Skies (Gloves) + Psychic Spark (Amulet) + Boots of Stormy Clamour (Boots) + Ring of Absolute Force (Ring) [don't forget to become branded].

2) Make an opponent wet.

3) Spam Magic Missle.

4) PROFIT.

So i actually thought about the lightning gear set (with the charges) but didn't opt for it since it seemed like your damage was entirely conditional based on how many lightning charges you had stored up.
