Not true. There are some very useful ones, like the gloves that gives +2 to sleight of hand. Plus it gives me free charcoal that has some value too lol

and after you can just simply swipe his pile of prizes because it has an easy blind spot.

if you want a nice pair of gloves, act 1 has the gloves of thievery - giving advantage in sleght of hands checks. and you can easily get the smuggler's ring also.
IMHO that's really worth trying to catch him red-handed... sorry, red-bearded.
