Did the Nautiloid attack the city of Baldur's Gate in daylight?
It seems this is what happened based on the cinematic at the start of the game. Yet, it cannot be so.

Nope, it's a different city. Can't remember what it's called, I think it's a little further North.

Isn't that city where Tav is usually taken from though? I thought that was why most have the Baldurian tags by default...

Fairly sure the cinematic was Yartar.

Who knows. So much of the story was changed between first drafts and what we got.

It's Yartar. :D

Just because Tav is Baldurian doesn't mean he doesn't ever visit nearby cities and towns. I mean, although you never see them, people do have horses ... and teleport spells.

it attacked yartar

Yet the bell tower you see being wrecked is also wrecked in Baldur's Gate. You can find the pile of rubble with the bell in it.

Not sure why they did that. One thing Larian definitely got correct was the cinematic. That's definitely not Baldur's Gate. BG is massive, I mean MASSIVE and incredibly well defended. That ship would have been toast in seconds.

Yartar on the other hand comes from Volo's Guide to the North and early CRPG's like Savage Lands (yay). It's a small city straddling or in some cases on one side of the Surbrin and Dessarin rivers, with mountains in the background.

It is highly unlikely that it was Baldur's Gate in the cinematic because your character is already in the pod before the ship arrives above the city. Lae'zel being captured at that time as well suggests the Nautiloid travelled to a number of locations / worlds before crashing down.

It would be really odd if the Mindflayers travelled to where they picked Lae'zel up, went to Baldur's Gate to pick you up + some of the other main characters, went somewhere else and then went back over to Baldur's Gate which would've been on high alert or still dealing with the after effects of the first encounter.

Rubble in Baldur's Gate could've been from the earthquakes, the robots doing something or the subplot of the fireworks bomb makers or the deep gnomes bombs.

That being said I think any city would have difficulty dealing with a nautiloid showing up for a minute and a half lol. Unless you have some sort of ward system that prevents teleportation? But that would also stop the main characters from teleporting around the city... hmm... yea makes no sense.

No matter how well defended BG is, that thing appeared from a portal right above it, nobody would have any time to actually even react.

Also no, Baldur's Gate isn't massive. It's only big on the sword coast with 120k population, a lot of those who live outside the walls. In comparison, Waterdeep has 10x the population.

Astarion states he was in the city when he was snatched.

It isn't Earth, dude. It holds a quarter of the entire Sword Coast during the busy season.

"Relative" is your word for the day. Or on the flip side wonder how 7000!! Vampires ended up in BG.

Derp.

That's a common misconception between the Waterdeep city proper and the waterdavian region.
The metropolitan population in 3e was around 132k, while waterdeep was quoted with 1.35 mil.
Similar will probably be true for 5e waterdeep, though I am not aware of any official numbers, both Waterdeep as a city and Baldurs Gate as a city are roughly comparably in size, with Waterdeep being only marginally larger.

Would Baldur's Gate really have a large number of ballistas and whatnot positioned to fire at the inside of the city? And would they all be manned at all times?
