Do shield effects work when using ranged?

Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting the adamantine shield, which says the user can't suffer critical hits. If I equip it on a character firing a 2h ranged weapon, does that effect still work, or do I need to be actively using my melee weapon + shield to have the effect? Thanks.

I always switch to my melee weapons after I'm done shooting because I know you don't opportunity attacks otherwise so I'd assume that's the same. I'm not sure tho
