Noob question: ability/skill tests
I thought until now that the most capable character in the party always rolles the dice in trials, but apparently the game only ever takes the character currently being controlled. How are you supposed to pass a strength check, for example, if you're a mage yourself? I have two very strong companions in the group who could be tested after all.

Am I missing something here?

Sorry for this beginner's question (although I've been playing for over 20 hours) :)

Yep, checks are done with a character you're initiated a conversation with.
You can select other party members beforehand and initiate a conversation with them, though.

Thank you very much. It's just difficult to know in advance which test will be coming up. :)

Yeah. There's some situations where you can come back and try the check with the right person, but not always.
Personally I just use a mod that uses the highest skill value in the party for dialog checks, as it does seem a little silly Gale can't help me with an Arcana check while he's standing 5 feet away.

May I ask for the name of the mod? Available from Nexus?
it's major flaw of this game. well, one of.
almost any RPG allows to choose one to pass check unless context doesn't allow to

Sure, should probably have linked it in the first place.

What games are you referencing because that sounds like bs.

As others have mentioned, there is a mod and sometime you can choose a different character.

Another option, later on, is that you can stack points on a character. You can get some gloves that give you 18 dex all the time just before Act 2. You can also get +21 strength from Hill Giant elixirs, which last until long rest. You can stock up on them early game in the Grove if you search around and do some long rests.

Those two things allow you to have a character that has 18 Dex and 21 Str without putting any points into them. That leaves a lot of points to put into tertiary stats for conversations and to have a nice CON stat as well.

But that's really only if you're cheesing it.

Wow, sometimes it seems to be a hobby of people to have to compete in bossiness over little things. I'm out of here now, because the original topic has already been answered. Thanks to everyone who was kind enough to help me with my original question. To everyone else: Have fun discussing inanities.

My point is that it's actually not that common.

deadfire had something akin to it too(it was a boost from party members rather than just using the highest one tho)
