Either bring Gale, the Lanceboard expert who will give you the solution, or - AFAICT, this cheese remains unfixed; smash the black king with a mace, you win.
If only I could pull that off in IRL chess games.
Seems like that cheese would require you leave your 3 (or more) party members behind and just solo it, otherwise the elementals would just attack other party members. (At least every time I've tried this trial, they will attack others as well as the torch holder.)
It's a good idea, I intend to try that cheese next time.
The problem with the other two puzzles is perennial; look up the solution on the Internet (the wiki, what you just gave here, etc.); no more puzzle.
Interesting about using Gale. I'm good enough at chess that this puzzle wasn't a problem but sounds like a good plan for others.
