It's similar to another encounter with undead ravens but in that case it works as one would think it would work.
Being surprised in bg3 is something I never understood.
For example, If I wait outside the combat ( ie: join a friend who already started one ) it's not rare that I also get the surprised condition when I join the fight.
I think the best one might do is to let a whole round pass and then join with a different character ( or get the alert feat or some similar class perk not to be surprised ), but as for starting the encounter and still being surprised... I haven't find a solution yet ( but I can tell you it's not only act 2 plants related ).
If you fail that check you can try hiding and hitting first - it should allow you to start a normal fight as both ambush nullifies each other, but just hitting them trigger their scripted ambush state. you could also carry the alert feat witch cancel all the ambush in act 2.
If you want to avoid becoming surprised at all for your team members it's best to take the Feat "Alert" (which I find in general a great Feat).
Yes, Alert is super valuable especially if doing an Honour Mode run.
