fun melee class for 2nd playthrough?
Hemlo

just finished my first playthrough as a straight sorcerer and it was fun, but i probably missed out on even more fun by not multiclassing (had no idea what would work)

but i want a melee class for my 2nd playthrough and i never play melee in games (always archer or magic normally) and i have no idea what melee to go for

opinions on fun melee classes? just playing on normal again so not worried about complete optimisation

Durge paladin. Durge bard is also funny as hell (I know it's not really a melee class, but I loved it).

+1 for Way of the Hand Monk.

Non Honor mode? Warlock (pact of the blade) 5 / Paladin 7 (oath of devotion or oathbreaker). 3 APR, pally aura, pick devil’s sight and fight inside darkness.

Honor mode? Barbarian (zerk) 6 / Rogue (thief) 3 / fighter (EK) 3. Focus on throwing weapons, pick EK 3 and tavern brawler fast for bound weapon (so you can throw anything). Later you can respect the fighter subclass to something else or go rogue 6.

actually what is a druid like? i played jaheira for maybe 30 minutes and she was able to summon an army with her

Druid at lvl 10 can summon a fair amount: Minor elemental, elemental, wood being, which can summon wood woad and if you go circle druid, you can also raise dead.

you have 4 main options for a pure melee build..

monk is its own thing. Using str and the tavern brawler feat, it does top tier damage, and midgame wis also increases damage (open hand). Just have to find your path to a good AC.

2h builds .. the barbarian with frenzy can attack 3 times with a 2h at level 5. That is a good, hard hitting and simple build. At that point you can multiclass to anything really-- if you pick warlock you can get another hit at level 10, but many creative ideas exist. If not barbarian, pure fighter gets a third attack late game. As 2h uses go for strength, you can also simply take 1 level of monk and the TB feat as above and kick everything as your third attack with occasional double punches (this uses bonus action, so barbarian doesn't benefit from the monk idea as frenzy uses the bonus action too).

^^ Option 3 is sword and shield, and getting your extra attacks are exactly the same as above. You may want the +2 damage from finesse weapons build here, and that becomes +4 in frenzy as a barb, making a simple rapier do 5-12 damage + str & bonuses.

option 4 is dual wield, which shines when you have both the fighting style and the feat, so any class that can get the dual wield style (fighter, ranger, bard come to mind), with 3 levels of rogue for the extra offhand attack, will do well. At level 8 (5 ? / 3 rogue) you will attack 4 times, 2 main hand, 2 offhand. This build is annoying in the low levels -- it takes a while to get your feat. I recommend level 1: fighter, level 2-5 rogue (1/4 build so far, feat at rogue 4) and respec at level 8 to the 5/3 idea.

edit: druid wildshape is technically a melee build, but I didn't think that was your thing here. Unlike previous versions, very little of your gear and special things translate when shifted. A monk and spore druid can pair well, adding damage to monk attacks with the druid buff. Or wildshaped, you have free HP that when damaged off put you back in human form, unharmed. Its a weird class with lots of things to do.

Paladin is a Heavy Hitting Battle Cleric with built in spells. Arguably the best melee as a Tav. Or at least most popular.

Wild Magic Barbarian, Its Big RNG
Have you tried Wizard?

Bard 10/Pal 2 with the correct gear (especially helmet of arcane acuity and band of mystic scoundrel) is very cool

Sheilelagh (nature cleric or druid) splashed with 5 levels of any martial class. Probably a ranger or Oath of the Ancients paladin.

This one, been playing a Barladin in my current playthrough just got to level 9 last night and starting the final bits before the point of no return in act 2.

She's duel-wielding shortswords+1h crossbows and just absolutely nuking everything with smites n stuff. Amazing lock picker, party face and a great mix of crowd control and melee/ranged damage.

You do lose out on the 3rd feat but 20 dex with high crit modifiers and an elixir of strength you get 21 str and 20 dex. Kinda wild how much damage you can do in a single round.

2nd choice would be either Monk+Thief or Monk+Fighter str build mentioned above. Or you could be even MORE broken by using a Barladin main character and respec your favourite companion to be the Monk dual class, currently using Halsin as my Monk+Fighter and those two are just wrecking everything while Wyll does cleric things and Gale is... present trying his best lol.

Here's a link to the Parladin build I've been using if you're not sure how to build one.
