The grym moves to the edge of the hammer 1st turn if your targeted PC is opposite of the hammer. Then it's stuck there for the 3-4 turns to kill it. With each hammer blow it only moves enough to get up each time, but doesn't have enough movement left to move away from it.
There's a scroll of slow in a book case in the mephit area right next to the forge.
A nice side effect of sticking to ranged attacks and cantrips was that my party was spaced out enough that its earthquake attack could only ever target one or two characters.
When I later tried the fight on my solo game, I also struggled to get him under the hammer, to the point where I just gave up and beat him to death with everything I had.
Rinse, repeat.
Do that and the Mephits that appear mid fight are more dangerous than Grym
First thing to realize, is that, if you wanna use the hammer, you want to turn off opportunity attacks. Set them to "ask" when triggered, so your melee characters do not hit Grym as he is leaving their range.
Make sure, that, if you do use a melee character, you attack with them first, to minimize the chance you steal the "Prime Target" Buff from your Bait.
Make sure to use someone as bait.
Try to get anything that lets you move more.
There are some gloves in a hidden chest near blighted village, that allow you to Jump without using your bonus action if you dash, meaning you can jump twice, which is a pure range-gain for any character at >10 strength (since Jump length depends on strength)
Get the Helmet from Blighted Village to give your bait 3 turns of momentum.
Maybe use a Rogue as your bait, give him the helmet, give him thief subclass, give him the boots that give you momentum when you dash, then just dash 3 times each turn to get maximum range.
At this point this just becomes a geometry game. Always position your bait, so it is in a straight line from grym through the hammer, to them. You could try to reduce it's movement by hitting ray of frost, even if it doesnt deal damage.
Maybe give Wyll levels in sorcerer so he can twin cast Haste?
Use Potions of Speed (you do get a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of Hyena Ears at Risen Road)
I sometimes even had the luck to position grym in just such a way, that he was still in Lava, after I hit him with the hammer once, so all I needed was for another character to immediately pull the lever again to just ♥♥♥♥ him up in 1 turn.
Ditto
DO NOT kill him right over the access hatches to the forge or you won't be able to make any items.
