Is it just me, or is the Hammer actually a hard way to beat...
Grym?

I've had pretty good success with having Karlach, Lae'zel, and whoever else is handy just beat him to death. Now I'm trying it the other way, and I'm having trouble more than one Hammer hit on him.

I guess I need to have multiple Misty Steps or maybe Glorious Vaulting on everybody, huh? Or am I missing something obvious?

I mean, besides Owlbear from the top ropes, throwing stuff from the stairs, and all that.

Cast slow.

The grym moves to the edge of the hammer 1st turn if your targeted PC is opposite of the hammer. Then it's stuck there for the 3-4 turns to kill it. With each hammer blow it only moves enough to get up each time, but doesn't have enough movement left to move away from it.

There's a scroll of slow in a book case in the mephit area right next to the forge.

I also find that just beating it to death with blunt weapons is usually more effective, or at least easier to pull off.

I just had my monk PC punch him a bunch while her lovely cleric girlfriend kept her healed. It worked.

I haven't tried the hammer yet, I just kind of... had 4 characters in 4 corners of the arena, attacking in a different order each turn so Gyrm would target someone differently each turn and stick around in the lava to stay vulnerable.
A nice side effect of sticking to ranged attacks and cantrips was that my party was spaced out enough that its earthquake attack could only ever target one or two characters.

When me and my gf were going thorugh the Grymforge for the first time, we had absolutely no clue we could even use the hammer to beat the Golem. We had only realised this was an option after several attempts and after the achievement popped up

When I later tried the fight on my solo game, I also struggled to get him under the hammer, to the point where I just gave up and beat him to death with everything I had.

Have your party spread out, one on each of the four platforms. Make sure they have ranged attacks available and use them to kite him back and forth as needed…selectively shoot him to trigger his Priority Target and make him walk in the direction you want. Have one person ready to drop the hammer and one keeping the lava flowing so Grym is superheated.
Rinse, repeat.
Do that and the Mephits that appear mid fight are more dangerous than Grym

I feel like it's only harder that way, if you dont know about it.

First thing to realize, is that, if you wanna use the hammer, you want to turn off opportunity attacks. Set them to "ask" when triggered, so your melee characters do not hit Grym as he is leaving their range.

Make sure, that, if you do use a melee character, you attack with them first, to minimize the chance you steal the "Prime Target" Buff from your Bait.

Make sure to use someone as bait.
Try to get anything that lets you move more.
There are some gloves in a hidden chest near blighted village, that allow you to Jump without using your bonus action if you dash, meaning you can jump twice, which is a pure range-gain for any character at >10 strength (since Jump length depends on strength)
Get the Helmet from Blighted Village to give your bait 3 turns of momentum.

Maybe use a Rogue as your bait, give him the helmet, give him thief subclass, give him the boots that give you momentum when you dash, then just dash 3 times each turn to get maximum range.

At this point this just becomes a geometry game. Always position your bait, so it is in a straight line from grym through the hammer, to them. You could try to reduce it's movement by hitting ray of frost, even if it doesnt deal damage.

Maybe give Wyll levels in sorcerer so he can twin cast Haste?

Use Potions of Speed (you do get a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of Hyena Ears at Risen Road)

I sometimes even had the luck to position grym in just such a way, that he was still in Lava, after I hit him with the hammer once, so all I needed was for another character to immediately pull the lever again to just ♥♥♥♥ him up in 1 turn.

its a game of hitting the guy to get his focused target / exclusive attack this person thing going so that he ends up on the hammer each round. Basically 2 archers hit him on the diagonal across the hammer and make him move the opposite direction each turn until its over. Everyone else is pulling levers or lava wheel or bashing the mephits and leaving the big guy alone. Its very easy to do, but your characters that get his attention need to be very good at hitting their target.

DO NOT kill him right over the access hatches to the forge or you won't be able to make any items.
