How would mod.io even work?
In no universe would I compromise my Steam account by using it to log into anything other than Steam itself, which leaves me with logging into mod.io only through Discord, realistically, but will mod.io still find some way to link itself to my Steam account, in one way or another, or am I being too paranoid?
Anybody with experience using mod.io?

I don’t have any experience with it but it just uses OAuth2 or something similar to log in. It will not compromise your account. I just went through the signup process and there is no indication that Steam gives them any permissions beyond an identifier. It’s like logging in to some other website with your Google or facebook account - the identity provider shows you a page that tells you what types of permissions you are granting. As long as it is read-only permissions then it’s not going to cause you any issues with them being able to log in without your permission, change things, etc.

You're not paranoid, you don't read... once again.

The game will get a built-in mod browser where you can simply download mods directly into the game (direct words: "[...]and the game’s browser[...]"). I see no reason why you would need an account to download anything - only to upload your mods, if you make one. If you have one of the games that already has mod.io built in then you could simply check that out.

You can also in some cases simply download mods from the mod.io website, depending on how the download is set. And you can do that right now - go there, look at some mods and you will see if that mod has a direct link or an "download in game" description. (here example for direct download, no account needed: https://mod.io/g/solasta/m/the-red-crow).
