No level editor?
What's the point of having a modding kit if you can't even make your own levels? there's literally no point to adding new classes and races to the base game because you'd have to literally dig through all the files and add custom dialogue yourself.

Say goodbye to custom modules I guess.

Correct. The significance of the modding tools as far as that stuff goes is that they may allow more people to make more of such mods, and possibly even better ones.
Which is disappointing, don't you agree?

So nothing really new.
eh. Only thing i'm really excited for are the new endings. There's already a lot of mods.
So far as I can tell, there's basically two primary impacts (though of course we can't know for sure until we actually have the mod tools to play with):

1) Official support means you can run supported mods and be pretty confident that it won't break your game. Given how often people do seem to break their BG3 saves with mods, that seems pretty useful.

2) Console players getting mod access. Doesn't much matter to us here since I assume most people on the Steam forums are playing on PC, but it's still nice for the people on console.

Solasta is using SRD 5.1, which is literally free content that Hasbro/WotC (usually) doesn't bother litigating and their own homebrew stuff.

BG3 on the other hand is using official content that you have to pay for to have access to.
Solasta apparently does have a licencing contract ith wotc, though. Just one that only includes srd stuff, instead of a big boy licence...

It furthermore and more importantly means they want to make sure it works with future updates, with is a kinda important factor and a big problem with a lot of current mods.

Would I have liked a level editor a la the NWN Toolset?

Of course. Nothing I've said means I wouldn't want one.

The fact that we're not getting one IMHO - speaking of "reading between the lines" because they pretty much hinted at it - seems to be a mix of technical and legal issues. Hasbro-WotC said no. I figured as much. But this has to do with their overzealous protection of their IP, not so much to do with any so-called "wokism".

Lack of dialogue editing? Well, the voicing issue intertwines with that. But I suspect people WILL figure out how to do it in unofficial ways, they already are at Nexus.

Scripting. This is the key question. The degree to which they open up the scripting API is going to determine the extent to which you can change story outcomes. This to me is what I'm going to be paying most attention to.

You are going to be able to change up the story. People have already figured out ways to do it (recruiting Minthara with the Daughter of Lolth mod, etc.). Thing is, to what extent, and with what degree of official support (both for end users and modders). I'm just hoping they do away with the need for script extender.

Best thing to stay informed will be to follow the general modding channel on Discord, many things not set in stone yet.

The mod tools are currently in alpha now and are subject to modification. They are still being developed.

The time is now if you want them to make changes to the tools and their capabilities. But in all seriousness, whining here at Steam won't affect that. You need to go to Suggestions & Feedback at their site, their Discord, and other places where the devs will actually hear you.

I'm already doing so WRT scripting access, an area where I think they can be influenced.

By this "logic" all existing (and apparently heavily used) mods can now be deleted as you declared them pointless.
