i turned on my pc today and in the downloads bit there was BG3 with an update

Same question...but I just update my GPU.

i checked on google to see when a game was last updated and it said steamdb which says there was one, but idk how reliable that site is though cos it says patch 7 and idk what size download a content patch usually is

I also received a small update today. Sometimes it is a STEAM update, but if it is in STEAM DB then it is correct because that uses data from the actual game log.

Patch 7 is not out to the public yet, but they have been updating it every day for the past month and a half. When it's available it will show up below the public header on steamdb. Also there is a mysterious 3rd DLC on steamdb DLCtab, not sure if it was there before but it updated a month ago... very strange, wondering if it will be the mod editor.
