Start over? Change race?
I recently started playing and I am not really happy about my character (I’m playing a gnome) I don’t want to start over, but I dislike the fact that he’s so small compared to the companions, which make his armor look less cool. Do you guys have any advice? I’m already through with the goblin camp/dungeon/cave…

You can’t change race once you start, you can only edit their appearance.

If you want to play a different race you’ll need to restart

Sorry but you should have read the description... Gnomes are a "small" race, along with Haflings and to an extent dwarves. I mean we dont call short people with pointy hats "garden gnomes" for nothing.

Actually this is good general advice. Actually read, and make an effort to understand the game's mechanics. It's quite a learning curve if you're new to DnD.

The spell Disguise Self can change your character to be taller. Unfortunately you can't edit the appearance of your disguises.

Disguise Self spell. try out all the races and genders to see how they look and just go with your favorite. BTW, your character's armor will likely change at least a few more times during the campaign. no need to start over unless your REALLY want to.

The nice thing about small characters is that you can search nooks and crannies where none of the companions could fit unless drinking diminution potions. I have never played a small character so far, but I kind of would like to someday even it were just for that.

3 of my 4 tactician runs have been Gnomes. Usually deep gnomes, really kind of a OP race choice.

Disguise Self can change your appearance, but not your racial abilities or attributes. It's more an illusion than an actual shapeshift.

There is no Polymorph Self spell in the game that does that. So far I haven't seen modders implement that. Maybe after the modding tools come out. There are a lot of races I'd love to try, but hate having to start a new playthrough just to try them.

Someone told me that when you're disguised as a small race, you can fit in those small holes. Never tested it myself, though. I stay away from stuff that feels like an exploit.

While there are definitely situational benefits to every single race. But the real OP race is Hafling, because rolling a 1 goes from 1 in 20 to 1 in 400. Because never forget, the more you roll, the more 1 you will roll.

As for OP, you can change race by going full ceremorphis, I don't think you will want that though. So restarting is your only other option.

Gnomes have advantages in certain situations you can't get unless you play as them or possibly a halfling. No other companion in the game is one of them which is one of the few negatives of the game.

While good advice for most CRPGs BG3 actually hides information from the player. Want to know if your race will get extra powers at levels 3 and 5? The game doesn't tell you. Want to know what your class or subclass gives at higher levels? The game doesn't tell you. The game is fine at telling you the basic mechanics, but really bad at telling you enough to plan your build.

'Just look the information up', yeah no. The information should be right there in the game, I shouldn't have to open a book or alt tab to another window to know what my subsequent class levels give me.

It also doesn't really fit here, as 1) the complaint isn't actually about mechanics (most of the mechanical parts of being Small have been removed from the game) and 2) the character creator is weirdly bad about establishing the relative heights of the races. It took me ages to realise that dwarves and halflings were roughly the same height.

@OP: if you really don't want to restart I think Appearance Edit Enhanced allows you to change your race, as well as switching body type.

True, Owlcat does give you a better view of how your class will build later on and Larian could have used something like that, but you can also look this stuff up online. A person that can make a post complaining about something like this also has the ability to look up the answer to their problem before posting it.

So? Good advice is good advice. I see no reason to withold it just because it doesn't 100 % fit the topic.
