Because you can completely "cheese" this (depending on your definition of cheese), by either getting a hireling at level 12, or recruiting a companion at max level, that you haven't recruited yet (since they start at lvl 1).
If you want to do it for the challenge, you're clearly not gonna be the combat type, so I'd recommend maxing utility first. Wizard for the scrolls, then prolly druid for the berries (or bard for the inspiration), etc.
and martial classes last.
Since you're going for support, I'd consider going charisma and constitution
