There's a correlation between large sales shortly after release and flops at the minimum, since there's a desperate attempt to get what they can before the game is entirely forgotten.

But yeah it is a bit more obvious the game was a success from sales numbers and player numbers. And making it into South Park, honestly.

It depends on the publisher too.
Capcom for instance tends to discount their games fairly quickly even tho they sell well.
