Also if you use a build that can take advantage of imposing conditons, using the shield to impose reeling is very good (like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55WkExA19os or similar)
It is however worth it for the XP, and the armour is good enough that I’d rather get it than not.
My suggestion (assuming you have two characters who can use shields) would be you give Lae'zel the helmet (prevents crits) and two other characters the shields (reeling, prevents crits).
If you have only one shield-user (but why???), then you could give Lae the heavy armor.
I tend to prioritize the shields and the medium armor because I never replace them, versus the heavy armor that is the best available until Act 3, but does get replaced in Act 3. The helmet works to give a heavy armor user crit immunity.
Absolutely, the ability to negate crits can save you more than once. Although I prefer the shield + one set of armor.
The shield is the best item. The med/heavy armor is second choice but there's better later on it doesn't have any synergies like the luminous armor you could already have. There's about 10 different armors that could easily replace it depending on your class and equipment.
The weapons are weak and already obsolete. Jorgoral's sword you can get right before that is better and Lathander's mace is better than the adamantine one. The scimitar might be useful for a dual wielder for a while, but there's several others like Belm and Justiciar's scimitar that will replace it later.
The weapon descriptions could be deceptive if you don't read the fine print. They only critical objects, not enemies in combat and are just +1, so it is the EXP and the shield that are the main rewards.
But the Heavy Armour is not only also quite strong for Act 1-2 Heavy Armour, but on top of that it also sells for 3k+ gold. So it's a pretty nice investment for your coinpurse.
Add onto that the fact that the golem fight is fun means I can't imagine skipping it myself, but to each their own, I'm sure you can still complete the game just fine without doing that bit.
