on the dice roll screen, you should have -1 from base INT, +4 from the Headband, giving you the +3 you should have for 17 INT. the +4 makes up for that -1 from base INT
17 Int is only +3 bonus. That's also not how bonuses from your stats work in D&D.
OP, try a save and reload? It may not be registering your new stat for some reason. Obligatory "Do you have any mods?" as well.
No mods. I logged out earlier and will log in again now. hope it fixes it.
So need to have 10 base int for the +3 from headgear to work?
if you have 10 INT, you'll get the normal +3 from the Headband
Yes it is indeed weird. Even my character sheet now have +3 on their int based skills. Will update once I come across an ability check again. currently running honor mode so moving slowly lol.
Man, that is some garbage coding.
The other drawback of using items is that you can't increase the skill. So you'll never be able to go above 17 Int, or above 18 Dex with the gloves, since the ability points are added to the base stat and not the total.
I guess for a bard the Headband is fine though, since Int is a secondary stat for them. If you really want to beat some Int check just send Gale ahead, if you have him in the party.
In BG1/2, if you had an item that set your ability scores to a certain number, that was absolute. If you already had a higher number, it would lower your ability to the target score.
In BG3, the game remembers what your native score is so that it can compare it with the score that the item would give you, and if the score from the item is lower then the item has no effect, rather than actually lowering the score.
This quirky way of accounting for bonuses (applying the natural one and then applying a modifier for the item) is likely related to this.
I'm generally not a fan of these items that pump your stats up like that. Feels like you're just cheating or they're a must have to create the most OP build.
+3 or +4 ?
