if you have 8 wis and the necro book buff, for example, you see -1 and +1. If you have 8 str and the club of 19 str, you see -1 and +4. Its probably a bad way to show it -- it should evaluate your stats from the current value, not twice (once for true value and once for buffed) as that is not only confusing & weird but inefficient.
Oh so you are saying I got 2 effect one from base dex and one from upgraded 18 one, did not pay attention to that I'll check it
Those are different cases though:
8 WIS and Necro book buff ARE actually -1 and +1, correctly canceling out but still important to display
Club of Hill Giant Strength, Headband of Intellect, and Gloves of Dexterity should ONLY be +4, +3, and +4 respectively, no matter what your attribute score in strength, intelligence, or dexterity are (assuming they are lower).
If you have a 12 DEX will you get a +3 from the Gloves to add to the +1?
It seems to work out correctly, in spite of the odd display of the info.
Yes, you are correct. I initially thought it wasn't worth displaying cancelled out values, but, in hindsight, I think showing both is indeed better.
When you have the gloves on your Dex is both 8 and 18 at the same time. Your Base 8 shows you the -1. The gloves give you +5 which equate to the +4 you should get if you have 18 dex.
The intelligence headband does the same thing.
You're getting the correct bonus either way, the game just has an odd way of showing it as it still shows your base 8 Penalty.
