found some random lore
for anyone who's a huge nerd like i am, i found something out. in the blighted village in act one, you can find a book called "The Wonders of Phandalin". inside, it's detailed that Phandelver's Pact was forged recently. this leads me to believe that the game takes place shortly after the events of the starter set campaign (or somewhere in that time frame, depending on how old the village is; the book speciaically mentions the year being 950 DR when it was written).

Canonically, this is right when Descent into Avernus is ending, and our game (BG3) is beginning. Incidentally, it has been about 120 years since BG2: Shadows of Amn and ToB happened. (1369 DR).

Hey wait a minute, don't all the radical lefties hate Columbus? The guy who set sail with three ships in 1492 laden with racism and oppression? Top kek. You've been supporting the very thing you hate THIS WHOLE TIME. :praisesun:

So, a DR date in Faerun is a Dale Reckoning.

What does that mean?

https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Marking_the_years

Dalereckoning is taken from the Year of Sunrise, 1 DR, when the Standing Stone was raised by the elves of Cormanthyr and the humans of the Dalelands. Since this time, humans were permitted by the Elven Court to settle in the more open regions of the forests. In some texts, primarily those which do not have direct ties to Dalesfolk history, Dalereckoning is called Freeman's Reckoning (FR). The calendar is widely used in Faerûn but has not spread beyond its shores.[1][2]

[snip][end]

That's the Year 1 of the calendar Faerun is using. But, BTW, (and not unlike the real world, where not everybody is using the Gregorian calendar), other calendar systems are being used at the same time....as you can see.

Now, it is interesting that in 1492 CE on Earth, Colombus DID set sail in three ships to the New World. So you have to wonder if there isn't a certain "nod" there. But I believe the name of the year actually comes from events in three Faerun port cities.

Also, that calendar date is kinda arbitrary, at least insofar as events on Faerun go as far back as 24,000 years ago.

The continents as we know them today where shaped in an event called the First Sundering, which happened 17,000 years ago, or so.

Humans only first started building their own civilizations 9000 years ago, after some of the dwarven and elven kingdoms were in decline.

Yeah, I'm a lore nerd also. I love this stuff.
