Sounds like Hasbro did a Hasbro
CEO of Larian Studios Swen Vincke:

‘Baldur’s Gate will always have a warm spot in our heart. We’ll forever be proud of it, but we’re not gonna continue in it. We’re not gonna make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re not gonna make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everyone is expecting us to do. We’re gonna move on – we’re gonna move away from D&D and start making a new thing.

‘I’m saying it here because we have a forum, and we get bombarded by people that expect us to do these things, but that’s not for us. It’s gonna be up to Wizards of the Coast – it’s their IP – to find somebody to take over the torch. We did our job.’

Sounds to me, being a cynic, that Hasbro decided to swing their collective d*cks around and put pressure on Larian to make DLC or MTX's to make them more money. I'm an avid MTG player and in the last 5 years (maybe even less), I've seen it go from a juggernaut to a game people are embarrassed to say they play. I've stopped buying products now because Hasbro are so toxic.

I've played the Divinity games and having another entry there is more than welcome. To me, it sounds like Larian couldn't run away fast enough. Good on them!

Divinity Original Sin 3 with BG3 engine or a completely unique sci-fi RPG next? Bring it on!

Who said they should? (aside from probably Hasbro)

So far Hasbro has made something like $90M from BG3. Seems like a win/win for Hasbro and Larian.

But with the attention and cash that Larian has gotten from BG3, they can probably move on to make a new game where they control the IP and don't have to pay out $90M in licensing fees.

I get the feeling Larian could have been possibily intrested in BG4. as I recall something in the interview Swen Vincke saying they had started a few ideas for Bg4 but felt it wasn't them.

Since Bg3 was such a hit, it could be Hasbro was demanding Larian a quick buck sequal, to capitalise on the sucess. It could also be the working relation with hasbro became unbearable and they demanded more controll, more money ect.... and Hasbro sorta show how iresponsible they are, they have been throwing the license around Disney , ect...

It could also be, the sucess of BG3 was too great, Larian excepted 10 000 concurent on Steam and got almost 900 000. So Larian wants to end it on a high note ratter than maybe make a not as acclaimed sequal and the lost of prestige. If they mess up a new IP it's less bad ( and can call it experimenting) ratter than making a sequal that everyone will expect to be a hit ( the bar would be too high)

Either way, its disapointing but understable....

Well... If someone does it (BG3-II, or BG4) it's also fine. As long as we can import characters from BG3 into it, because start again at lev 1 and end midterm at lev 12... NO. This story needs to be concluded. Preferably with a reckoning against Vlaakith or rescuing Karlach from Zariel's clutches. . Still, they're both too weak challengers for lev 20 party, maybe go against mephistopheles? Or help Drizzt Kill Demogorgon in Menzoberrazan. A detailed depiction of Menzoberrazan in the likes of BG3 Baldur's Gate city, with all the great houses and their well know famous (notorious?) characters, would be great.
