Thing is, just about everything they said I was expecting. No BG4, no expansions, no DLC.
What I wasn't expecting: they aren't going to work with WotC on ANY D & D based content in the future. (I kinda suspected the next game wouldn't be D & D based, and I figured D:OS 3 was coming up in the near future, if it wasn't the next title.)
Hmm. I guess it depends on how you want to read this statement.
"Instead, Vincke said at the panel, Larian plans to move away from Dungeons & Dragons entirely and do something new, leaving the IP in publisher Wizards of the Coast's hands."
Now, maybe that just means "our next game is not going to be D & D based". Which, again, I was expecting. That doesn't mean that's a firm statement on NEVER again working with WotC to EVER do future D & D based content.
Three things I continue to hope:
1. Larian will make something D & D based in the near future (I don't even WANT that to be "BG4".)
2. The success of BG3 will motivate other developers working with WotC to create similar titles. (By "similar titles," I mean, party-based, turn-based (although ALSO having RtWP doesn't BOTHER me if they have both), companion-based, and D & D based, also of course using dialogue trees to drive the story branches-progression.)
3. I still do NOT think Larian will release a full dungeon/campaign editor or DM Tools BUT there is a space for a developer to do an NWN3, and I hope SOMEBODY will.
I mean, it was possible that they were going to do BG4. But a quick look through their recent releases suggested that DLC would be pretty much nonexistent.
At least we should stop seeing 'DLC when' threads in a few months.
they probably mean too much money went over to these other IP holders
and they want to keep more of the profit for themselves
and I would agree, the success of BG3 have very little to do with the use of these D&D or BG IP
If "official modding support" offers what I think it will - which is close to full access for modders to the fundamental game files, debug console, and scripts - modders might be able to create the following:
a. new companions (fully interactive ones, not just hirelings)
b. new actual dungeons and areas to explore (without full dungeon editor, they will need third party modeling tools, BUT it could still be possible)
c. new story and storyline - like entirely new romances, new endings for the game, new endings for companions, new progression for the romances, and maybe even new cutscenes.
There are some possibilities once modders are "fully enabled" even if they don't release a full Toolset a la NWN's Aurora Toolset. And that's where I'm hoping.
I mean, I don't think this rules out ever making a BG 4, it just means it isn't planned which doesn't seem too surprising if they're working on something else now - they aren't a multi-game studio AFAIK.
It is an interesting question if WotC will try to pump more money out by getting someone else to make a BG 4, but so far they've been pretty cautious with that particular name. Probably better odds they try to make some other crpg sequel like NWN 3 or something...but there's always the problem of who makes it.
Right now the only crpg studios that aren't really tiny indie ones are Owlcat (they...could I guess), Bioware (not going to happen obviously), Obsidian (also not going to happen for the same reason basically), Larian (...again)
Oh, I guess there's inXile, but given that they're also owned by Microsoft...maybe? But no.
Everyone wants their own IP basically. Except Owlcat, who could make a D&D crpg I guess.
Did you miss it?
it's not about 'milking' in any way, it's about enjoying the company of a friend for a little extra.
Alas. Just hope their next project isn't a Divinity game, was totally not into that world
I don't mind it, honestly.
Be very curious what they're up to next- I feel pretty safe saying it'll be a turn-based RPG, but beyond that, who knows.
Honestly, if WotC and Hasbro keep going the way they are, there may not be another D&D video game for a long while, they keep pissing off D&D players and publishers and firing people.
Studio actually meant what they'd been saying since forever.
