Later on though it seems like there's pretty slim pickings on spears. There's a fantastic, legendary one you can get in Act 2, but there's also very nice other weapons that have more utility (for my groups, anyway).
Good thing about spears is that humans and half-elves get automatic proficiency with them here.

You're right on Great Weapon Fighting ( That would be because a versatile weapon literally isn't a "Great Weapon". Vers weapons are lighter than fully 2 handed weapons, thus the techniques the style's bonuses represent aren't as effective ), but not on dueling if you're holding a shield in your other hand.
