What does Withers want with all that gold?
So this strange wraith shows up in my camp and offers to resurrect the dead party members, help my party members to change class, and provide hirelings to fill rolls in my party should I need them. And he does all of this for gold? What does he spend it on? His wardrobe isn't for clothing, he doesn't eat, he doesn't have a house or a mortgage to pay. Does he have a gambling habit I'm unaware of? Is he saving up for cosmetic surgery? I don't think anyone will be able to help him with that lack of a nose, though.

Of course learning who he really is, which I won't spoil here, makes his request for gold that much more confusing. And he doesn't even get upset if you steal it back from him, so it isn't that much of a money sink, now is it?

They just want it to cost you something. All the deities we see are like that it seems, Jergal is no different. Though, the fact that he doesn't care when you take it back, tied in with the questions he asks you about what a life being worth when you first meet, it kinda makes sense. The gods are weird and help when you give them some sort of show of something

I'd say it was to teach you the value of that kind of powerful magic...but the costs quickly become trivial compared to how much gold you end up carrying around so.....

He's saving up for a Magnificently Adorned Tomb. 😋

And repairs on the ruins won't be cheap, as you've no doubt wiped out his loyal servants.

It's a legal thing of sorts, there must be a price. Even if it's just token.

As long as a transaction takes place it's fine. Kelemvor is a real stickler for rules too.

Balance. Everything has it's cost.

Sacrifice. It's symbolic.

He wants to get pickpocketed

Nothing, but by the rules of the divine, he can't just bring people back to life for free. Usually costs 300GP in diamonds to cast Revivify.

Have you seen all that bling he wears ? :)

I think you can more or less actually ask him that.

It's about the gesture / ritual of the exchange, not so much the value of the gold.
Which you can by the way steal back from him without much consequence.

He doesn't really care about the gold, you can just pickpocket it back no probs

Perhaps it is about sacrifice. The ritual requires a price paid. Coin represents that you are willing to put a part of your own resources into it. Symbolic more than what is given that matters in theory it could be anything you care about and toiled to get.

isn't the whole thing that hes just abusing a loophole?

by default he cannot just openly help as that breaks the god rules, but by giving it a cost hes not "helping"

it's not interference if hes providing a reasonable service.
