Those Squatters....
So what was the message in this quest? What was the purpose?

I have never met anyone who is okay with that situation. The only people I have ever heard defend squatters are renters, or own nothing.

I even tried giving them money to leave, and they wouldn't. They literally would rather kill the owner than accept charity lol Still trying to figure this one out Larian.

Yea… but I still don’t like the moral of it’s alright to kick a person out their home because they are “rich”. I’m not rich myself but that just bullying the owner

My first playthrough, I tried negociating to see if he could help with arangement, then looked around to see what he was up to. Found the "kid surprise" he had prepared and gutted him right there and then.

I don't think the moral is about wealth, there are no true good answers in the initial dilema. A well-off man, still making donation is going his home stolen by war refugee, you want to help both, and neither wants to compromise. Thankfully, you discover the old man is a terrorist and makes the choice all too easy afterward.
That's it though. I felt there was no true answer AT FIRST.

But then the original owner was revealed to be child-bombing swine and all my sympathy for the scum was gone. Relished killing him way too much.

Would be far better if there was some way to find out what he was up to before resolving that confrontation.

For me the moral choice is to kick the squatters and give them money and report the rich guy for terrorism. The house still belongs to him but he should be put in jail.

In short no one gets the house UNTIL the homeowner is ok with it. Helping the homeless should be by choice not by force. Accepting refugees is fine, losing your home because of them is not.

Doing an evil action because the person evil does not make the action good

The stuffed bears across the street in the donations is a clue what he was up to.

The purpose is it all leads the the fireworks store in town if you follow the quest to it's conclusion. It also introduces you to the guild in town if you play it a certain way.

The action you choose to pick in that situation is not labelled by the game as intrinsically evil or good. Not even if you're a paladin and you get a special dialogue for it.

So moral judgments are up to you.

Personally a rich guy up to shady ♥♥♥♥ who has a bunch of property he never uses: squat away.

But again, it's up to you.

A lucky roll provides a way.

In any case: "I can't pay them to leave." That's just the way some people are. "They shouldn't be okay with it." That's just the way some people are. "Why can't I make them do what I think they should do?" That's just the way some people are.

How should this play out when you don't know what's going on under the house? It's simple. Do what you can with what the NPCs allow you to do. Kick out the squatters if you think that's what should happen. Even if you do know what's under the house, feel free to stick with the owner of the deed, and then, deal with the owner.

There's no message here. If an NPC doesn't give your party many options, pick an option the party has.

If there was any message here, it would be "You can't always have your way with everything and just have to work with what you have because not everything will end up with sunshine and rainbows just because you think it should."
