The emperor and the artifact question

Spoilers ahead:
-The plot tells ShadowHeart found and stole the artifact in a difficult mission. For this reason she has the artifact at the beginning of the adventure.
-But the emperor was sent to a simillar quest and he found the artifact and liberated himself from the elder brain influence. Why he doesn´t have the artifact with him?

I missed something. I don´t understand who (ShadowHeart or the emperor) found the artifact first.

If you can give me some answers, I would appreciate them :)

The emperor was sent to retrieve it by the brain, Getting close to the artifact made him free from the brains control.

He followed this feeling inside and found orpheus.

He does not leave the artifact because he fears that would again make him fall under the brains control.

Then, the emperor remained inside the artifact when he found it?

It's actually a very interesting question and it's not completely clear from the game, it may be that emperoror is a mind flayer from the intro that tadpoled Tav and in that case he entered the prism during crash, check this tread in Larian forum https://forums.larian.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=934563&page=1

The emperor is *in* the artifact. He can't have the artifact and be inside it at the same time.

Although ... in the fight at the start of Act 3, it seems like you go inside the artifact via a gith portal, and yet you are still carrying the artifact.

I'm pretty sure that in Act 1 and the start of Act 3 you "receive artefact" after you return.
