This game is ok but is massively overrated
What exactly does this game do better than other CRPGS that came before it? The DND rules are a slog to play in a single player game in 2024 and just don't really work well, resulting in an RNG-dependent game. Tons of crap all over the place to sift through looking for worthwhile loot, a fairly generic fantasy setting, overly complex mechanics that take an extreme investment to learn well unless you are a hardcore DND fan. Incentives to save scum every 5 minutes. And the bugs my god it is a year later and this is still buggier than Skyrim at launch.

The story in the beginning seems oddly similar to DoS2, you crash and have to explore this smallish area, you need to find a cure for some affliction put on you. But DoS2 had much better combat, because it wasn't trying to adhere to DND rules which are made to be played on a table not in a single player video game. I'm not halfway through the game but I hear it falls apart even worse in Act 3.

I don't really get all the hype for this game, I feel like it is mostly just a middle finger to modern AAA games which just outright suck sure, and TotK which was like BotW DLC, but this game is totally mid. Oh and the bear sex and horny factor is certainly earning it some attention, I guess.

over 100k daily steam players half a year after release seem to disagree

Go buy Starfield then. Lol

Pity the game isn´t for you.

Preferences in entertainment are subjective. It really isn't more complex than that.

There was no affliction in D:OS2 akin to BG3, however. Besides, talking about games starting in a similar fashion, every TES literally starts the same. :lunar2019grinningpig:

As Costeau already said, it's a preference thing. If you're following a hype because of others or alike, you're almost always setting yourself up to be disappointed in one way or the other. Just stick to what strikes your fancy or dabble in things that may seem interesting to you personally and you'll be just fine.

That being said, I can't wait for all the nagging threads for any reason when Dragon's Dogma II releases.

Otoh this is the easiest to learn dnd ruleset and you have old hands complaining it's too simple... kinda crazy. I suspect most people are somewhere in the middle and find it just fine and that's why it's so popular.

Tbh, I couldn't put a pin in any one specific thing that this game does that would have me go "This...THIS is why it's better!"...all I can say is that it's been a more enjoyable experience than any cRPG I've played in at least the last ten years, on just about every level.

I haven't run across many bugs...though I did play KOTOR2 on launch so maybe I've just seen what a buggy unfinished mess looks like already so I'm inoculated now...

This is the only party based cRPG that I've found that I want to immediately start another playthrough after finishing.

KOTOR II deserved SOOOO much better, holy crap. Even with the Restored Content mod there are some things that just fall apart, which is an absolute travesty.

The real tragedy was the lack of Hk47's meatbag commentary, which made him a must have party member in the first one. Or I just don't remember much of KotoR II, other than Kreia being sus.

E: Here's to hoping Saber Interactive nails the remake.

Wait, the remake is still happening?
I thought it got put on hold, or cancelled.

Huh.. Shows what I know!

its a solid rpg using the 5e system (and in general sticking to the ruleset, which no other D&D game has done)

has an interesting cast of characters, fun mechanics, great story, plenty of side content to do, lots of replayability.

a game does not need to break the mold to be excellent, it just needs to do what it does well, and this game does that easily.

calling D&D a generic fantasy setting is ironic because it's literally what every generic fantasy setting is copying

it's not generic; it's the original

Aside from things like Conan the Barbarian and Lord of the Rings it's hard to argue that Dungeons & Dragons is NOT the Alpha & Omega of VERY high fantasy settings, from video games to movies, TV series, fantasy literature, you name it.

Warhammer Fantasy? Goblin Slayer? Dragon Age? Adventure Time? The Deed of Paksenarrion? Final Fantasy? Kings of the Wyld?

Countless more and yet more are still being inspired by the setting to this day.
