Let it all out :-)
multiple casters who cast the Darkness spell on your party
it's a challenge (if you're unprepared) the first time; cakewalk afterwards
I still hate the cloister fight, but that's just because fights with that many enemies are a bad idea in a turn-based game because it can leave you waiting 3+ minutes watching enemies act before you get another chance to actually play the game again.
Maybe the blood of Lathander helped me? That thing was useful in many fights where shadows and darkness played a role. Probably the overall best weapon in the game.
The first time I did this fight I talked to Viconia, but in subsequent playthroughs, I've just sent Astarion to kill one of the dudes on the left or right and left everyone else by the door. Then I have him misty step back to the group. Try wall of flame/stone/ice, if you use Gale have him cast a huge AOE, bring out any summons. Shadowheart can cast guardian of faith and spirit guardians. Let your tank catch the dudes that make it across. Make use of scrolls and potions.
This battle is simply irritating and my least favorite in the entire game. So yeah, this is my method to make it go faster. If you want to bother with the convo, just misty step everyone back to the stairs when the encounter begins and then employ this strategy.
