Locking more content than that behind finishing the game would be stupid. "You must finish the game to play the full game." That's some solid JRPG BS right there.
imagine expecting a game you paid for to lock content away from you.
such is the state of gaming.
After finishing the game why not unlock things? It only adds to the fun if you get a new game plus. Imagine playing through as an illithid. Or having max stats, or one of each potion that won't consume.
Or how about, get this, NOT locking content in the first place? So you have all your options from the beginning and can play however you want.
God I feel old. IN MY DAY this ♥♥♥♥ only existed in fighting games like Tekken.
Beyond that no.
You had to actually unlock it by playing the game. That used to be the norm for video games in the Plasyation 1 & Playstation 2 eras.
Seconded. Before the era of DLC, some games would have you play games multiple times or under certain conditions to unlock special features or skins or what not. Then DLC became a thing and it turned into why should we just give the player this item for spending x hours in a game? Let's charge them $1.99 instead!
I'd much rather have a New Game+ or special bonus unlocks than having to spend actual currency for it.
Fortunately modding is a big thing now. I'm refraining until this game has died down a bit so I don't have to worry about them breaking with each patch though. I'll absolutely need to look into full party mod and gender-flipped origin characters. Sexy vampiress Astarion and cute little mage Gale... Yes, please.
That's just unlocking cheat mode ^^ I remember Spyro unlocking the one-shot-one-kill fireball and similar things, but design changes sometimes for the best: the "route system" from japanese productions comes to mind, Armored Core 6 or Nier Automata have the best "restart the game" mechanic that I've seen so far. You can't do that with a 100/200h RPG, not very fun imo.
edit: also Dark Souls 2, the only Souls where I felt NG+ wouldn't be a waste of time.
