assassin damage question
My Astarian character is a Rogue - Assassin and at level 4 I started seeing two damage numbers appear next to targets when hit with a range attack, like he was getting 2 attacks for the one action.

He is now a level 6 Rogue - Assassin and that doesn't appear to be happening anymore, I just see one damage number next to targets when hit with a range attack.

I'm pretty sure I was using the same weapon the entire time (+1 light crossbow).

Does anyone know what might have cause me to gain, and then later loose, the double attacks?

Thanks!

Dual wield attacks twice when you attack unless you specifically use the bonus action attack before the main attack.

You might've had Dual Crossbows. Sneak Attack is added to one of your attacks if applicable.

edit: Level 3 Alacrity for Assassin lets you have a second turn at the start of the combat but not during.

edit 2: Perhaps you had a buff that gave you another damage die of some sort of damage type on top of what you'd usually have.

You can hover over specific damage rolls in the combat log to get a better idea of what they are.
I think sometimes the rogue's sneak attack gets displayed as though it was a second attack instead of just tacking it on to the attack damage, so you see the weapon and sneak attack damage separately. That could be what you were seeing?

Thanks! I use sneak attack a lot so I bet that was it.

Yes, I think so. I use sneak attack a lot. It seemed like something new at level 4, though maybe that is just when I noticed it.

If you can sneak attack and didn't deliberately use sneak attack for your shot, sneak attack is applied automatically as a second line of damage, instead of it being combined into the intitial roll. Depending on the gear and the enemy, this can be good or bad, because some bonuses to damage will apply to both lines, as well as some damage reduction that a couple rare enemies have.
