Astarian / assassin 2nd bonus attack
I've read that the easiest way to get this is to choose the Fast Hands class feature and that is a feature available if a character has the assassin and thief subclasses.

I'm level 6 and the character screen for Astarian says Rogue - Assassin, which I read as Rogue (primary class), Assassin (subclass).

During level up (from 5 to 6) I tried pressing X to add a class and Thief is not in the list. The options given are: wizard, barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, sorcerer, warlock

I'm guessing that "thief" in this contest actually referring to the Rogue primary class and eventually I'll get an option to select Fast Hands during the levelup process? Or is there something else I need to do?

I haven't been given the option to select a class feature for several levels now.

Thanks!

Thief and Assassin are both subclasses of the Rogue main class. You can only have one subclass per main class, so having taken Assassin, you cannot take Thief.

Also, only Thief has the extra bonus action ability.

Thanks again - I was also wondering, missing out on an extra bonus action seems pretty significant is there anything that assassins which you think is a fair trade-off for that?

depends on how you use their bonus effectively.
Replenishing actions when entering combat, + the free crit on surprised or creatures that haven't taken their turn is really strong, if played around.
To make up for that, I'd go into Gloomstalker Ranger, to get the free attack on the first round, as well as a bonus attack from lvl 5 onwards. And maybe fighter too, for action surge.
