Because it's one of the best, if not the best shield in the entire game, while there are better medium armors. Besides, medium armors are a bit of niche in BG3.
On the other hand, you also get limited good medium armors.
In the end of the day, that's why I get the heavy amor + the shield Or the medium armor: If my Tav/Durge is human of half elf, I get the shield, if he is a dwarf/gith I get the armor (due to the racials that allow those items to be used no matter the class).
Wouldn't be getting medium armor option no matter what race is the MC. Heavy is just plain better and the shield is amazing.
Niche? The heavies are limited to fighter, paladin, cleric (50% of domains?), and ranger can pick it up (choice). That is 2 classes and 2 more from choices.
Medium can be worn by all the heavies (but most would not) and 2 more classes (not that big a deal) and bard by choice... but that aside, its gifted on 2 races which opens it for every class if you want it. I can't see how its more niche than heavy, in terms of who can wear it.
I do agree heavy is the better choice if you have 2 who can wear it. I usually do not have 2 heavy armor guys -- at this point laz is probably a monk and only SH is able to use heavy (and she gets the hat which is heavy armor, because as I said, put 1 no-crit on each person) so I end up making 2 mediums/shields instead of the heavy armor. Its not that heavy armor isn't better, its that few players will need 3 heavy pieces, even 2 is a lot for me usually.
Niche because of the weird bonus that requires character to get hit in order to trigger. Medium armor users don't want to be hit much.
Second Playthrough was a resisting Dark Urge, which adds quite a bit to the story.
Third playthrough just started today and I'm playing as Karlach, so I hope that her perspective will also change aspects of the story.
The adamantine scimitar ignores resistance to slashing damage, but it what I didn't realize is that it has a hidden bug/buff that also makes a secondary scimitar ignore resistance to slashing damage as well. If you pair it with belm, for example, it does make for an awesome combo. I saw a video highlighting this effect, and it now explains why it seemed to work very well for me in the past when I had these 2 scimitars equipped.
