Baldur's Gate[baldursgate.fandom.com]
Baldur's Gate 2[baldursgate.fandom.com]
Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal[baldursgate.fandom.com] (Supposed to be BG3, but cut down to an expansion for the second game)
You can also check the Forgotten Realms wiki.
There was an expansion for BG1 called Tales of the Sword Coast.

Knowing something about its story will either make you scratch your head when you finally understand the full story of the Emperor although it seems to definitely be being referenced by things you find in his Lair. I KNOW Larian utilized it - whether properly or poorly - in crafting his story.
And one final point - noted above - the game treats the main character of BG2 as a canonical person named Abdel Adrian, who never ascended, and became a politician in the city. That appears to be due to some later novels that create this canon. You can even find Abdel's shield.
You will run into four characters BG1/2 players are familiar with: Jaheira, Minsc, Sarevok, Viconia. Some people are disappointed the latter is only a villain as in the earlier games she could be a party member and a romancee. There are threads about how those earlier characters are utilized. My post is already long enough; I leave that for other threads.
