Ugh, shadowheart relationship (spoiler)
She just springs on you, basically marry or abandon romance. No middle option, you can't even exit to talk later.

That's how relationships tend to go. At some point your partner will ask if you're serious about it and not wish to continue if you're not. Pretty standard stuff.
sack up and marry best waifu
And what middle opinion did you expect?

Being able to talk to her about it in, say, a day (long rest) would be a good middle option, I think.

The Halsin spiel? 'I want you to happily accept that I'm free to love as I wish.'

"Let's just do what I want" isn't much of a middle option.
She doesn't ask for marriage. She asks for commitment. I get this is the way people often seal the deal on commitment, but, just saying. ALL companions (and I think even Halsin) will eventually say, "If we're the real deal, time to stop flirting and kissing other people."

People say the camp acts like one big orgy. Actually, no. Jealousy ALWAYS starts to be a thing. Even the ones who accept poly (like Halsin) eventually will draw a line.

The only character I know who basically can give you a marriage proposal is Wyll, but he's gonna offer an acorn instead of a engagement ring. But then Wyll has lineage issues to worry about. (Granted, if Tav is male, that might require adoption, or maybe a broodmaiden on the side since he's bi.)

BG3 romance doesn't make any logical sense unless you get all your love advice from magazines or the Internet. The temples in the city aren't used at all for marriage, you instead base your biggest romance decision on the advice of a carnie at the circus... who ends up being (spoiler removed).

Who *might* end up being (spoiler), but only if you haven't already encountered (spoiler) twice before that.
Hey now, just cuz you didn't ask Vicar Humbletoes if he will perform weddings, doesn't mean he can't or won't. I guarantee you if you pay enough gold, the Vicar will be glad to perform at your wedding.

Like ... real life?

"Um, baby, I'm not actually sure I love you enough to commit to you. Let me sleep on it, OK? I'll get back to on this by next Tuesday."

At least in BG3 you can save scum your way through your romantic flings. Harder to do *that* in real life.

I mentioned elsewhere that I feel BG3 romances seem to me like they're little more than scripts for players to follow in order to see a sex scene. Most video game romances seem like that to me.

Not my thing, but I also am not required to play that part with the oodles of other content in the game. I don't feel like I missed out.
They are pretty much like romances in other CRPGs. Much like the ones in Dragon Age, or BG2, or Mass Effect, D:OS2, Dragon's Dogma, Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher, Skyrim, or Wrath of the Righteous. Fine, the mechanics may vary slightly, but if you've played similar games, you expect them to pretty much work the same way, and they do... it's pretty much a well trodden formula at this point. Including almost all games using playersexuality at this point, BTW.

The romanaces in WOTR are similar in that the companions will wonder if you're going to commit to the relationship or not.
I somehow ended up romancing both Lan and Darian on one run and had to crush their hearts or else I'd probably end up eating them for lich powers.
Yes, shocker, there is a polyamory mod for both WotR AND BG3. For those who want no jealousy and to have their harem.

Come on, if you're expecting romantic writing on the level of Harlequin novels (not that those aren't literary trash themselves), or scenes that are going to look steamy enough to go on porn hub ... they ain't gonna do the former, and for ratings reasons, they ain't gonna do the latter. On the latter front, BG3 Sex Framework is advancing on that technological revolution (LOL).

If you're looking for a more realistic relationship simulator, get Persona.
