No.
While it is true that some items for a quest can be found there, conveniently all at one place, you can gather those items elsewhere too.
The tower is a nice explorer reward. Speaking of explorer reward, see if you can surprise everyone by finding the Explorer's Ring in the Underdark. That kind of reward it is.
It is like the haunted house. Once you figure out the trick it is a walk in the park.
They can disable them on their own.
* In the tower, you can find two rare mushrooms that Omeluum in Myconid Village needs to try to cure you of your tadpole situation. If you have never met that character, go to Myconid Village and talk to Blurg -- the character in question is a (very interesting) colleague that Blurg can summon.
* In the tower, Lae'zel can (in all her travels) find three Gith 'heretical' slates that pertain to the history of the Prince of the Comet. Getting all three is tied to a quest for her -- I am not sure if it's mandatory for finding / freeing the titular Prince of the Comet but I always get all three slates in my playthroughs.
* There's some lovely magic items if you run the table in the tower, and figure out the still working automaton call and response statements.
For these reasons, I always do the Tower. There is plenty you could skip in the Underdark, but I do not consider this one of those things.

If you enter the building that way, they literally lay out for you what needs to be done to 'wake up' the tower and have a far simpler climb through it's levels.
You can get 95% of what's in the tower without starting a single battle or smashing a single turret, with the whole party and no sneaking required (once your first person is in).

But I guess it´s obvious I send Astarion alone then?
Is literally a junk item, lol.
You'd be hard pressed to sneak it. I'd go invisibility so you could send anyone.
But that back door may be locked now that try to remember. Yeah. Astarion.

Necessary? Nah. Bought the two items needed for the quest from the Grove of all places (which should be still accessible all the way up to the point-of-no-return in Act 2 unless the Grove was overrun or closed off).
