how is this game still in top10 most played?
serious question cus im genuinely impressed. even though i put 300 hours in, i'm still shocked its been able to maintain so many concurrent players.
Like there's none of the modern addiction encouraging mechanics you see in so many other games. Granted there is a massive amount of ways the story can play out, really exploring ALL the paths is usually only done by a tiny percentage of the players.

So what is it? New users? DnD style socialising over discord? Because i dont know any other narrative style game thats been most played like this for this long

It's the replayability of it all.

Even before all the different permutations you can get in the ending, there's literally THOUSANDS of different character builds you can try out and play with.

Plus all the Romance Routes with branching paths and all the different things that keep getting found by players after 500+ hours (spoiler alert: I didn't know sh*t about fugg about the Killer's Sweetheart until I saw a Toyhouze video on the ring, and apparently it's in the Gauntlet of Shar. Never found it. Not once in 5 playthroughs.

A high amount of variability between playthroughs that results in differing approaches/outcomes and a fair amount of freedom on how to approach sections of the game

What about the romance? Huh? Huh?

I think it's because Larian synergized BioWare. Both greats.

Its getting pathetic, just quit it. The romance is also a high variable system that varies between playthroughs

I'll give you my answer: mods.

New ones keep coming out, and I keep wanting to try them. There's a new Shaman class mod at Nexus, and I notice I might just want to get back in the game soon to try it. I mean, holy crap, mods have let me do things like use Tier 3 illithid powers earlier in the game, and this is ... wild. Or use 5E spells Larian never put in the game. I'm not even sure I've gotten around to TRYING all those additional spells. Thanks to modders, I've got to play an Artificer with a blaster rifle! How friggin' cool is that ?!?

There's a Drow Equipment mod that gives me new toys for Minthara to play with, and a Harper Equipment mod that has some things to give to Jaheira. There is all kinds of crazy equipment mods, too.

People keep saying to wait till 2025? Nah. don't need no friggin' "official support". I'm having fun now. And if Norbyte would do me a solid, I'd be having even more, but then I found Debug Book, and I'm at least half way there.

Tbh I'm v tempted to try mods and expand this delectable gameplay. I also just can't be arsed to actually upkeep it as I prefer a more hands off approach

Hands on for everythin else, gotta be lazy somewhere

i just didnt expect people to want to keep playing this type of game. like 2 years ago this was a niche genre. Its like seeing a visual novel as most played on steam. Cool, but weird in an interesting way.
also just great when a large number of people get to share the enjoyment of something like this

still, mods are a niche thing and its not exactly as simple as steam workshop's click to add to game. Though i do remember even on release a LOT of people were using a clothing/gear expansion mod...

Looting hundreds of useless containers.
Sorting trash. Selling it to vendors.
Running around very slowly from one container to another.

This is basically what takes up to 50% of all your play time.

Even though I'm starting late, it's a big game with lots to do, I dunno.

I see you didn't address perhaps the reason BG3 is sooo successful. Perhaps it's BioWare with a Larian spin - on D&D. With lots o romance. Huh? Huh?

you underestimate the amount of visual novels that constantly break upwards of 1k players every day

Lots to do and a lot of differences

Act 2 Temple Spoiler: In my first playthrough for example, with Yugir I managed to convince him to kill his group, his pet, then himself. Then in another playthrough I battled him, and in another I killed some rat person and he ended up being banished by Raphael. I was genuinely blown away by the variation and tactics you can go through. I've heard you can also talk him down to hunt the final follower of Shar, then convince his pet to side against him and then fight him.
