Sorry but what the hell? (spoiler: opening of act 3?)
I think this is act 3 anyway - the bit when you go to get some sleep after getting a good view of Baldur's Gate and suddenly you get pulled into the astral plane and basically a bunch of level 9 Gith ninjas kick the absolute ♥♥♥♥ out of you. Did I miss something obvious here about taking on unarmed opponents with fists of titanium who get 3 attacks a turn and can also cast level 5 spells?

IDK, was kinda easy for me, but I think I'm usually like level 11 or 10 when I enter Act 3.

It's not that it's classically hard vs. easy. It's that we're not used to NPC's going nova on us like we do on them.

It's uncomfortable to meet Monks for the first time at a high level because those jackhammers are firing. Oh, you're going to hit me 6 times and then ki-slam me into another dimension? Cool cool cool.

Beatable fight of course, but my goodness was meeting those dudes like a nasty jump into an icy bath the first time.

Hold spells are your friends -- if they hit.

This is one of the harder fights in the game, but the easiest way to lose it is to fail to get to the portal in time. As long as you can do that, you should win unless you have bad luck, bad tactics, or an entirely unsuitable party.

(The OP was complaining about what happens *after* you enter the portal, not before.)

ignore the gith that come out of the portal; just rush the portal by any means necessary

once you're inside keep the monks at range by disabling them whenever possible - hold person, frighten, grease, ice, sleep, banish, etc.

use thunder arrows/spells to push them off cliffs or fling them with telekinesis

Er, how can I ignore them? I might have, not sure, but I'm getting my entire party killed in 2-3 turns max (I have tried a couple of mixes of classes - they're level 9 - and they're just taking 30-40 damage per turn. I will have a think about what else I can try but it feels like a complete dead end for this party.
You can't ignore the ones in the Astral Plane.

I'm lvl 10 when I leave Act2. Hold Spells work on githyanki. Also, hideous laughter. I always lock up the big guy.

Actually you can. Just last week I had the developement team informed about an issue in that regards. Because of how it works and can break your game it is to be fixed.

You have to build with a plan to hit.

There is the Astral plan also.

ive done it with different parties , spread out , summon earth elemental with a druid, warlock or sorc - hide a rogue, misty step a caster , sanctuary a cleric , focus on the ones the illithid doesnt stun - all of that works along with what others have pointed out like big aoe , ice and fire

I thought the classic blunder was taking a long rest and not expecting an encounter of some sort. Must be super annoying being woken up every night by something :D

Not so bad when it's Lae'Zel waking you up watch the sunrise with her while she tells you she loves you.

A little more annoying when it's Lae'Zel waking you up to tell you she wants to fight you until one of you is nearly dead.

That actually only happens 4 times, 3 of which are conditional.

- 1) If you fail to honor the deal with Lump, he will ambush you in Act II.
- 2) If you destroy the grove while Halsin is alive, he will ambush you on your way into Act II.
- 3) The start of Act III which is non-negotiable (the encounter in question).
- 4) During Act III, you can potentially get ambushed by Astarion's siblings who are under compulsion to reclaim Astarion. You can mitigate this if you defeat Cazador before they jump you.

Never had Halsin ambush me after destroying the Grove. He just auto-escaped his cell then spawned dead in front of the gate.

Just something I saw on YouTube from one of the more reputable BG3 CCs. I never did an evil route so the Grove has never fallen for me (meaning I can't personally vet it myself yet), but it can happen if people like Pikajulie or Kayn have had it happen.
