Why is everyone dead in the Wyrm rock audience chamber
I am never clear as to why everyone is dead in the audience chamber when you go back.

If you side with Gortash, his banite guards will explain why.

Ah, I see. I never have sided with Gortash. He seemed like a scum bag.

In a feudal society, a tyrant's rise to power often involves removing lesser nobility that could be obstacles to power.

Actually in a feudal society the nobles are essential in managing a collection of fiefdoms. The royals depended on them.

Faerun/BGC is not a normal, standard feudal society.

Actual dialogue: spoilers? (BTW, I only know this from reddit, not my game.)

MC: “This place looks like a slaughterhouse. What happened?”
Iron Consul Nuff: “My lord requires a clear path to his magnificent future. We cut away the troublesome bramble.
Do not face him without Orin’s Netherstone in hand, or you will meet the same end.”

Also: apparently, if you go through his journals, Gortash talks about not having enough tadpoles to tadpole all the lesser nobility, so he just killed them.

It's difficult to talk about generalities in FR. Baldur's Gate has Patriars, Neverwinter has Arcane Brotherhood and Elturel a Torm theocracy.

Regardless, it's about removing obstacles to untrammeled power.
