If you're loading a game and opening multiplayer, there should be a cog wheel at the top next to Multiplayer Settings. Again, if you have the Direct Connections box ticked, there should be a server code.
Give that code to your friend and they should be able to use it in the multiplayer menu to join you.
And when I'm in my own game, when I pause the game, at the bottom there are 4 boxes for me and 3 others free, when I click on them nothing happens? Is it a bug?
You're supposed to invite them through the "multiplayer" button in the pause menu. The bars at the bottom are just a reminder of who's in the game.
