Are the mods that let you automate combat any good?
I've heard there are mods that let you give control of your entire party to AI and let battles play out as AI vs AI spectator matches.

I've honestly always liked the idea of just building/gearing a powerful team and seeing how it holds up in a strictly mechanical sense, instead of my victories being at least in part because I'm smarter than the AI. Trying to complete an all AI tactician or even honor mode run seems like a fun buildcrafting experiment.

So, has anyone tried these mods, maybe even in tandem with mods that improve the AI all around? How bad is it?

They are normal.

Haven't tried it, but there IS a mod that puts all party members but Tav under AI control. I think it's also allowing a bit of scriptable behavior control for the AI - which is good.

Other than that, don't know much how it works in practice. I'm a control freak (LOL), doesn't suit me. (By this, I mean, I even use mods to make certain summons controllable, even if they wouldn't be normally.)

Also, yeah, there are mods that improve enemy AI, haven't tried those, either. Me being me, I just prefer cheesing how stupid it already is.

The mods basically just turn on the existing AI for the companions. The AI is the same which is used for other entities. So if you have seen other entities making mistakes, the companions make the same mistakes. Simple as that.

It is pretty normal and they make good use of abilities and such. I do not like it since it does not allow much planning. It is the typical "do the best you can do now, regardless of next encounter".

Maybe some can be happy with that if it is used on a fighter and such. But on spellcasters it is quite a horror to have unless you see it as a challenge.

I understand the lure of building a party and seeing what happens. (TABS anyone? Lost many hours to that, but not more than 100 hours so far.)

This is far more complicated than TABS, but it would still be interesting to see what happens. Maybe when I come back to the game...

I think the very generous long resting in this game makes this a lot more feasible. No matter how bad the AI is wasting spells and abilities you can have what you need for the big fights.

You can make a pretty busted team in this game to, but the AI won't be smart enough to end boss fights in one round like most players; and a lot of the boss fights are pretty brutal in this game if you actually let the bosses get some momentum. I think AI vs AI battles could result in some epic clashes that are entertaining nail biters.

The one thing I know the AI will be better at than I am is it will exhaust every option I've given it to try to win, maybe grasping victory from the jaws of defeat, in ways I'd never think of, through persistence in situations where I'd just get lazy and reload, lol. AI doesn't get mentally fatigued, discouraged or lazy no matter how the fight is going.

I think you may find better information on "how well they work" on the mod page itself under the POSTS tab!
You shold NEVER install a mod before thoroughly reading the description page and the posts tab.
I am just making an assumption that you are modding from Nexus Mods ;)

I'm going to say not Good but Neutral.
Probably Chaotic Neutral at that.

The problem would be resource management. When fighting enemy AI, they fight like there's no tomorrow (because for them, there isn't). So spells, consumables, special attacks, etc. would all be used up.

While some of these can be regained with a short rest, things like cleric, druid, and wizard spells require a long rest.

One question I have that you all probably wouldn't know the answer to, is whether or not mods that improve the AI in general would work with a mod like this to improve your parties AI?
